What should I expect on the date of a sleep study?

Preparing for a Level 1 Polysomnogram (PSG) sleep test involves a few steps to ensure accurate and useful results. It involves monitoring various physiological parameters during sleep to diagnose sleep disorders. Here are some steps to prepare:

1. Inform our Sleep Technician about any medications you’re taking, including over-the-counter and herbal supplements. Some medications might interfere with the study.

2. Disclose any medical conditions or allergies.

3. Refrain from consuming stimulants such as caffeine or nicotine at least 4-6 hours before the test.

4. Avoid alcohol and sedatives on the day of the test, as they can interfere with the accuracy of the results.

5. Try to stick to your regular sleep schedule leading up to the test.

6. Wear loose, comfortable clothing suitable for sleeping.

7. If you have any specific items you need for sleep (like a special pillow or blanket), bring them with you.

8. Avoid screens (phones, tablets, computers, etc.) before the test. The blue light from screens can interfere with sleep.

9. Avoid taking long naps on the day of the test, as they can affect your ability to fall asleep during the study.

10. Have a light, easily digestible meal before the test.

11. Arrive on time. Being punctual ensures that the study can begin on schedule.

12. If you have specific needs or requirements (e.g., you need assistance getting into bed), inform the sleep clinic in advance.

13. During the PSG, you’ll have electrodes attached to your scalp, face, chest, and legs to monitor brain waves, eye movements, muscle activity, and more. This is painless but can feel a bit unusual.

14. Once everything is set up, try to relax and fall asleep as naturally as possible. The goal is to capture your typical sleep patterns.

15. If you have any concerns or questions about the procedure, don’t hesitate to ask our Sleep Technician.

Note: Hotel accommodation is not included in the price of the testing service.
