Level 1 Polysomnogram: What to Expect During Your Sleep Study

If you have been told you might have sleep apnea — or if you have been waking up exhausted no matter how many hours you sleep — a sleep study may be the most important step you can take toward better health.

At CPAP and Sleep Disorder Clinic, we offer the Level 1 Polysomnogram (PSG) — the most comprehensive and accurate sleep diagnostic test available. Here is everything you need to know before, during, and after your study.

What is a Level 1 Polysomnogram (PSG)?

A Level 1 Polysomnogram is the gold standard procedure for diagnosing sleep disorders such as sleep apnea — and it is an attended test, meaning a licensed sleep technologist is present and monitoring you throughout the entire study.

Unlike home-based tests, a Level 1 PSG is conducted in a controlled clinical setting and comprehensively monitors multiple physiological systems at the same time. It tracks:

  • Brain waves (EEG)
  • Eye movements (EOG)
  • Muscle activity (EMG)
  • Heart rhythm (ECG)
  • Breathing patterns and respiratory effort
  • Oxygen levels
  • Sleep positions, snoring, and leg movements

This holistic, multi-system data allows our sleep doctors to rule out overlapping conditions, prevent misdiagnoses, and provide accurate, personalized treatment recommendations — something no simpler test can match.

Before the Test: How to Prepare

One day before your scheduled sleep study, one of our clinicians will personally call you to walk you through the procedure and go over the patient checklist. You will not be left guessing what to do.

Here is what to keep in mind on the day of your study:

  • Wear your sleeping clothes — come dressed comfortably, as if you are going to bed
  • Eat a light meal — heavy meals are not recommended before the test
  • No caffeine — avoid coffee, tea, and energy drinks on the day of the test
  • No strenuous exercise — take it easy on the day of your study
  • No daytime naps — this helps ensure you can fall asleep naturally during the study
  • No need to pack toiletries — our clinic is fully equipped with basic toiletries for your overnight stay

What Time Should You Arrive?

We recommend arriving 1 to 2 hours before your intended sleep time. This gives our team enough time to set up, orient you to the clinic, and make sure you are comfortable before the study begins.

The sleep study itself typically takes 6 to 8 hours — or as long as it takes to collect sufficient data for accurate interpretation.

During the Test: What Actually Happens

When You Arrive

Upon arrival, our sleep technologist will give you a brief clinic tour, explain the procedure in full, assist you in filling out the necessary questionnaires, and — most importantly — make sure you feel completely comfortable before any sensors are attached.

We want you to feel at ease, not anxious.

The Sensors

Once you are ready, our technologist will carefully attach a series of sensors to specific areas of your body. These sensors monitor everything from your brain activity to your leg movements throughout the night.

The good news? All sensors are completely pain-free. The conductive pastes used to attach the sensors are water-soluble and gentle on the skin — there is nothing to fear.

Throughout the Night

A licensed sleep technologist will be monitoring you the entire time — watching the data in real time, making adjustments as needed, and ensuring your comfort throughout the study. You are never alone.

What Makes Our Sleep Lab Different?

We believe a sleep study should feel less like a medical procedure and more like a restful overnight experience.

Our sleep laboratory at CPAP and Sleep Disorder Clinic BGC is designed with patient comfort in mind:

  • Comfortable, cozy king-size bed — sleep as you would at home
  • Luxurious, hotel-like environment — our BGC location offers a premium feel
  • Safe, clean, and well-sanitized — your health and safety are our top priority
  • Highly accessible location — right in the heart of Bonifacio Global City

Many of our patients describe their experience as an “overnight staycation” — and that is exactly the feeling we strive to create.

After the Test: Results and Next Steps

When Will You Get Your Results?

Results are released 6 to 7 business days after the procedure.

Who Reads the Results?

Our sleep doctors are the authorized specialists who read, analyze, and provide written recommendations based on your PSG data. Once the report is ready, our licensed respiratory therapists will explain the results to you in detail — either via telemedicine or in person — so you fully understand your diagnosis and what comes next.

How Much Does It Cost?

Sleep study prices vary depending on the type of test requested by your physician, but a Level 1 PSG at our clinic typically ranges from ₱18,000 to ₱26,000.
